Disaster
I always say that the main reason you want to hire a professional, rather than rent the equipment and get a buddy, isn’t for the music. If all you need is a playlist I can happily share some Spotify links. But no,
The reason to hire a professional is because we know what to do when things go wrong.
Weddings are complicated, there are a lot of moving parts, and it’s very easy to get lost in all of it. Ultimately you can’t plan for everything, but let’s take an interesting one: rain. 60-70% of couples want an outdoor ceremony, and the vast majority of the time it works out. But just in case, you should make a plan B location in case of emergencies. Most venues are great and the on-site coordinator can help with those logistics, but it’ll help with peace of mind if you are aware of that plan so it’s one less thing for you to think about.
As for the Reception,
The dance floor should be near or under a cover of some kind.
Especially as someone with electronic equipment, it’s very important to be somewhere that even if it rains my equipment doesn’t have to be moved around, or at least not far if at all.
One fun occasion was when the Reception was in a Ramada (those pavilions at parks and such). About halfway in it rained, and it rained a TON. The floor flooded to about an inch deep in water, which meant the dance floor, being raised, was slightly wet. Now the slip safety concern is up to the couple and the venue, so all I needed to do was grab a couple of the dining chairs and get my cords out of the way of the water, then proceed to play the only song that a DJ could possibly play under those circumstances:
“IT’S RAINING MEN”
